how to measure insole of shoe
Measure the length of your foot from the heel to the ball of your foot. Hold a book or something else with a flat surface in between your knee and toes (to keep them together).

Use that flat surface to measure how far up your foot is. That will be the measure of insoles you'll need.

For example, if my measurement is 10 inches, I'll need an 11 inch insole (1/2 inch extra space is recommended).

If you're measuring more than one person's feet, make sure to measure their feet all at once so you can use round numbers and avoid fractions when calculating insoles.

To re-measure your shoe (so you can try to salvage it), simply put in the new insoles and run a piece of tape from the tip of your toes, over the balls of your feet, up the heel. Measure that distance. Subtract that distance from you total length measurement (10 inches), and you'll know how tall to cut your new insoles.

If it's too short, add more material to your new insoles. If it's too long, cut off some of the material.
If it's too high, try picking a different insole. Some insoles will be longer than others, and some will be higher than others. Use one that you think looks more like the current insole (I always buy the insoles that look most like the current). If that doesn't work,

cut off a little bit of your material at a time until you get it to work. (Make sure to measure it around your foot at each point so you can make sure it's even.

For example, if you can slide your finger just below the top of this insole but above the bottom of the one that it's replacing, then take off a little.)
Measurement is too low

Using this brand of insoles that I bought from [INSERT STORE HERE],

I found my shoe was an [INSERT SIZE NUMBER HERE]. If you use a different size and brand, you may need to adjust the measurement.

The default insoles that came with my shoes were also [INSERT BRAND HERE] insoles. When I removed them to put in my new ones, they measured 3/4 inch long by 1/2 inch high.
